Samples

On this page are selected lessons taught both before and during my field experience. For each you will find a lesson plan, a presentation that serves as the "script" for the lesson for both me and the class, and any attendant activity plan necessary, all saved as PDFs.

My teaching approach has been shaped by years of seeking to engage clients and prospects in the workplace. To me, selling and demonstrating are simply educating with an ulterior motive! In those settings, I have found it most productive to work from a base presentation, and I was delighted (relieved?) to see that this approach was effective in the classroom as well. I don't read my slides, but they provide anchors for the content as I deliver it, and having some sort of structure as the backbone for the lesson helps to set a good pace and keep things on track.

Sampling Error

This lesson was taught to a mixed group of teacher candidates -- mixed in the sense that some were math/science types, and others were not. The objective was to take something of more general interest that could be covered in a brief (10-15 minutes) session. As you will see by the linked downloads, yes, I did bribe my students with M&Ms, but it worked!

Introduction to Pi

Another lesson taught to teacher candidates, another mixed group from a math/trig standpoint. Most of us have heard of pi, but what is it exactly? The best part of this lesson was getting that "a-ha" moment from adults when the measurements were posted and the ratios were calculated!

Circles and Ellipses Review

This was one of my final lessons during field experience, preparing for the first test in the conic sections module of precalculus. The materials stand alone reasonably well, in large part due to the intriguing game I created ("What's Missing?") to serve as a review. In it, students had to decide what piece or pieces of information they needed to resolve the problem presented, which requires more than a "plug and chug" mindset. It got pretty competitive!

Screencasting Tools Review

One of our final projects in my certification program was to explore some of the various tools to aid and abet remote learning and work with one or more of them. I chose to demonstrate/review three screencasting tools and the results are at right. The first couple are basically an excuse to use the tools in the context of a way I might introduce myself to my students the first day of class, but parts 3-6 are indeed a review of the free versions of the tools.
